Groove School isn't a course.
It's a library of lessons and tutorials — concepts, strategies, approaches — done the way YouTube won't let me do them.
No algorithm. No ten-minute mark. No chasing a thumbnail.
Here's what I truly believe.
Music is a language, and the bass guitar is tricky at best to learn without context; without understanding how it works inside the music you already love and listen to.
If you don't find ways to play that music in context, with other people or along with records, you're not really learning the instrument. You're practicing in a vacuum.
And if you can't play without staring at tab or notation, you're not really playing.
Groove School is built around learning the bass in context, so you can play with more confidence.
The Framework.
I was a school band director and music teacher for eleven years. Every teacher understands standards and rubrics. Mine is simple:
Play. Hear. See. Explain.
If you can answer all four honestly, that's when you know you're ready to move on — whether that's an increase in tempo, the next phrase, or the next section of the song.
Before any of that.
You have to answer honestly — what kind of music do you actually want to play? Who do you want to play it with?
Let your curiosity lead. Ask questions. Take inventory. Pursue what fits the journey you're on.
You might not even know what questions to ask yet. Neither did I, for a long time. That's part of it.
Who this is for
While there are some very basic concepts inside of Groove School this is not designed for complete beginners. You already play a bit. You know your way around the instrument. You want to understand how the bass works inside real music, not in isolation.
Who this isn't for
If you're looking for super high production value, tabs on the screen, and a pile of polished PDFs — that's not what I'm making here. There's plenty of that out there, and some of it is really good.
And if you're a complete beginner, this probably isn't the right room yet. The lessons assume you've spent a little time with the instrument already.
What's inside
Lessons, tutorials, concepts, song breakdowns — the stuff I'd show a friend who plays if he came over and asked me to explain something.
Meet Your Instructor
Hi, I’m Ted Gould III — also known as Ted Talks Bass.
I help adult beginners and returning players learn bass guitar through groove-based lessons built on real music — not endless exercises or theory overload.
Before Groove School, I saw the same pattern over and over again. Talented adults would start learning bass, feel confused or behind, and eventually quit — not because they couldn’t play, but because the lessons weren’t designed for how adults actually learn.
So I built Groove School to be different.
Instead of guessing what to practice, you get a clear path. Instead of memorizing shapes, you learn how bass works inside real songs. Instead of feeling lost, you build confidence one groove at a time.
If you’re starting later in life — or picking bass back up after time away — Groove School was built for you.
